Surge Capacitors

Overview

Electrical surges caused by lightning strikes, switching operations, and equipment faults are common in power systems and can subject electrical equipment to damaging overvoltages. Hilkar Surge Capacitors are designed to protect the winding insulation of generators, motors, reactors, and transformers from these transient events.

By absorbing and redistributing high-frequency surge energy, Surge Capacitors reduce voltage peaks and limit electrical stress on insulation systems. This improves equipment reliability, extends service life, and minimizes maintenance costs and unplanned downtime.

  • Reduces equipment downtime and repair costs
  • Improves operational reliability and system availability
  • Protects against interturn insulation failures
  • Faster response than surge arresters against fast-rising transient voltages
  • Extends the service life of motors, generators, transformers, and reactors
  • Reduces the likelihood of pre-strike, re-strike, and re-ignition in circuit breakers
  • Easy to install
  • Low-loss dielectric design
  • Long service life

  • Industrial facilities using motors, transformers, generators, or reactors
  • Protects against high surge voltages with fast rise times
  • Withstands motor impulse voltage levels recommended by CIGRE and IEEE
  • Suppresses multiple pre-strike and re-strike transients during switchgear operation
  • Recommended for use with surge arresters to provide complete overvoltage protection
  • Operating Voltage: Up to 36 kV
  • Impulse Withstand Voltage: Up to 200 kV BIL
  • Surge Capacitance: 0.1–2 µF, depending on application requirements

Hilkar Surge Capacitors are custom-designed for 1–36 kV systems with capacitance ratings from 0.1 to 2 µF, available in single-phase or three-phase, 50/60 Hz configurations. They are primarily used to protect industrial motors, transformers, reactors, and generators.

Each unit is engineered to match the specific application, ensuring effective suppression of transient overvoltages. Custom designs for lower or higher system voltages are available upon request.

Overview of single phase and three phase surge capacitor types manufactured by Hilkar

Hilkar Surge Capacitors are typically installed as follows, depending on the application:

  • Between each phase and ground in the protected equipment's terminal box or associated switch panel.
  • Connected to the equipment terminal box using a minimum 3×25/16 mm² cable and the provided accessories.
  • Grounded to the motor, transformer, or circuit breaker earth connection.
  • Flexible connections must be used with porcelain bushings to prevent damage from shock or vibration.
  • Tightening torque for fixing nuts must not exceed 25 Nm.
  • Flexible leads may be shortened but must not be extended and should be connected directly to the protected equipment terminals.
  • Mounting brackets or clamps
  • Optional connection cables and flexible leads
