dv/dt Filters

Overview

Hilkar dv/dt Output Filter Modules protect motors from high-voltage spikes generated by PWM motor drives using IGBT switching devices. Because IGBT rise times are typically between 50 ns and 200 ns, even relatively short motor cables can produce voltage doubling at the motor terminals due to the travelling wave phenomenon.

These filters reduce the dv/dt (rate of rise of voltage) and limit reflected wave overvoltages, protecting motor winding insulation, extending motor life, and improving the reliability of variable speed drive (VSD) systems.

  • Reduces dv/dt stress on motor windings
  • Extends equipment service life
  • Complies with general-purpose motor standards for cable lengths up to 100 m
  • Compact and cost-effective solution for short cable applications
  • Reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI) on nearby equipment
