FlexVAr® STATCOM utilizes advanced Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) technology combined with a high-performance digital control system based on modern DSP and FPGA platforms. The system configuration can be scaled according to the required reactive power capacity and system voltage by using one or multiple MMC units, with or without a coupling transformer.
Each MMC unit operates with an independent control and protection system. In the event of an internal fault, the affected MMC is automatically isolated, while the remaining converter modules continue operation without interruption, ensuring high availability and system reliability. A fully integrated containerized solution is available, incorporating MMC power modules, control panels, auxiliary systems, and water-cooling equipment. This design simplifies transportation, installation, commissioning, and field integration.
For applications requiring higher capacitive reactive power than inductive compensation, LC(R) harmonic filter capacitor banks can be combined with MMC units to create a Hybrid STATCOM Solution. This configuration provides dynamic reactive power compensation while reducing overall system cost and improving power quality performance.
- Reactive Power Compensation — Dynamic control of inductive and capacitive reactive power to improve power factor and enhance grid stability.
- Load Balancing — Compensation of unequal phase loading to improve system performance and reduce network losses.
- Voltage Unbalance Compensation — Reduction of voltage asymmetry caused by unbalanced loads and network conditions.
- Voltage Regulation — Fast voltage support and stabilization during load variations and system disturbances.
- Flicker Mitigation — Suppression of rapid voltage fluctuations caused by dynamic industrial loads such as arc furnaces, welding equipment, and rolling mills.

FlexVAr® STATCOM utilizes an advanced Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) topology consisting of modular H-bridge and half-bridge submodules equipped with high-performance IGBT power semiconductor modules. The required system voltage determines the number of series-connected submodules used in each phase leg or converter arm, enabling a flexible and scalable design.
The converter submodules are designed for fast and easy replacement during maintenance, minimizing downtime and improving system availability. Advanced capacitor voltage balancing algorithms ensure precise voltage equalization across all submodules, allowing FlexVAr® output voltage and current waveforms to meet international harmonic performance standards.
The system applies optimized Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control with a moderate switching frequency to achieve an ideal balance between harmonic performance, efficiency, and IGBT switching losses.
A dedicated water-cooling system efficiently removes heat from the power semiconductor modules mounted on cold plates, ensuring reliable operation, improved thermal performance, and extended component lifetime.
