Current Limiting Reactors (CLRs) are one of the most effective and economical solutions for limiting short-circuit currents in medium- and high-voltage power systems. They reduce electrical and mechanical stress on busbars, insulators, circuit breakers, transformers, and other critical equipment, improving overall system reliability and extending equipment service life.
Current Limiting Reactors are installed where the prospective short-circuit current exceeds the interrupting capacity of the switchgear. Their inductive reactance is carefully optimized to maintain an acceptable voltage drop during normal operation while effectively limiting fault currents to safe levels during short-circuit conditions.
In addition to fault current limitation, CLRs are widely used as load-sharing reactors to balance current between parallel feeders and transformer circuits. They are designed for continuous operation at rated current and to withstand specified fault currents for the required duration.
For applications with strict space or electromagnetic compatibility requirements, Hilkar offers magnetically shielded air core reactors. The magnetic shielding minimizes stray magnetic fields, improves electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), enhances thermal performance, and enables compact installation without compromising reliability. All reactors are manufactured and tested to ensure long-term performance in demanding industrial and utility applications.
