Hilkar Current Limiting Reactors (CLRs) are designed to limit short-circuit currents in medium and high voltage power systems, reducing electrical and mechanical stress on busbars, circuit breakers, insulators, transformers, and other network equipment. They provide one of the most practical and economical solutions for keeping short-circuit currents within the withstand and breaking capacities of the equipment.
Current Limiting Reactors are installed where the prospective short-circuit current exceeds the interrupting capacity of the switchgear. Their reactance is optimized to minimize voltage drop during normal operation while effectively limiting fault current to safe levels.
In addition to fault current limitation, CLRs are also used as load-sharing reactors to balance current between parallel feeders. Hilkar manufactures air core and iron core current limiting reactors for system voltages up to 420 kV, designed for continuous rated current operation and specified short-time fault current withstand capability.
Inrush Current Limiting Reactors, also known as Damping Reactors, are connected in series with capacitor banks to limit the high inrush currents that occur during capacitor switching. By reducing transient current peaks, they protect switching devices, capacitors, and associated equipment while improving the reliability and service life of the power system.
